Why I Joined Masonry

Since I was a very young man I had an interest in becoming a Mason, mainly from the influence of my Great-Grandfather who was a Mason as well as a man whom I highly respected & loved dearly. My Great-Grandfather passed away before I was old enough to ask him for a petition & I felt my only ticket to becoming a member of the fraternity was gone forever. The years went by & I thought & thought about Masonry all the time, but didn't really know how to go about joining the fraternity now with my Great-Grandfather gone, until one day in a conversation I had with my Great-Grandmother who was also a member of the Order of The Eastern Star. I said to her "I wish Papaw was still here because I was ready to become a Mason". She said to me "Well son, you know your Uncle such & such & Cousins such & such are Mason's don't you"? I said "no I didn't, but I do now". So another year or so went by & in another conversation with my Great-Grandmother she asked "son are you still considering becoming a Mason"? I said "yes I am" & she said your Papaw would be proud of you. It just so happened that I worked with a brother who was a Mason; so one day at work I built up the courage to ask him about Masonry & that's all it took. He brought me a petition, I filled it out to his satisfaction, then he signed it. I then began calling up my other family members who were Masons & talked with them & they signed my petition, then I was on my way to a new beginning. At this point in my young adulthood I was lacking something in my life & that something was the bonding of like-minded men that Masonry offered. Good, honest men with high moral & ethical standards. As I like to say "They don't make em like that anymore". I wanted to be a part of something great. To be associated with good, honest, god-fearing, moral men in a brotherhood that was centuries old & has endured through the ages. Masonry changed my life in ways I could never explain & I would highly recommend it to any good man in search of that special place where he belongs.
