Past Master and current Secretary, Harmony Lodge No. 6, Galveston
The picture I chose as my best – and it came out exactly as you see it, with no cropping or light-filtering – was of the old Galveston Daily News building on the northern side of the 2100 block of Mechanic Street in downtown Galveston, designed by famed architect Nicholas Clayton.
The structure was, for more than three-quarters of a century, home to the oldest newspaper in the State of Texas – metaphorically, a part of Galveston’s heart, because in and out of it was pumped what folks needed to know: the news of the day.
In a block that is now quiet, and purposed for residential rather than commercial use, the building has never ceased to display its exquisiteness of design and architectural magnificence – if only we would turn our faces upward to see it, as I turned the lens of my loaned camera on Sunday evening, 12 March 2017.
(This structure housed the newspaper’s operations from its completion in the mid-1880’s until the paper relocated to its current headquarters on Teichman Road – near the Causeway to the Mainland – in 1965.)
